Yellow Ribbon Day and Queensland Parliamentary Friends of Rural Fire Brigades

Thursday, 21 Jul 2022

The inaugural Queensland Parliamentary Friends of Rural Fire Brigades will be held in the evening of Yellow Ribbon Day, Tuesday 13th September 2022 at the Parliamentary Annexe in Brisbane.

An initiative of the RFBAQ, the Queensland Parliamentary Friends of Rural Fire Brigades is an event that will allow all Members of Parliament to meet with elected Rural Fire Brigade leaders from across Queensland to gain a better understanding of the 1,400 brigades that defend 93% of Queensland.

The Members of Parliament who are the sponsors of this to be an annual event are Stephen Bennett MP, member for Burnett; Rob Skelton MP, member for Nicklin and Shane Knuth MP, member for Hill. The RFBAQ would like to thank these three members for the positivity that they bring in wanting to promote what the 28,000 brigade volunteers do for communities across the state.

Representatives from Local Government are being invited as are manufacturers, suppliers and key stakeholders who enable brigades to keep their communities safe.

The RFSQ and the QFES are very supportive partners in this initiative and we hope that all MP’s will be able to attend the function and meet with the elected brigade representatives from across Queensland in a one on one informal environment. The Hon. Mark Ryan MP, Minister for Fire and Emergency Services has championed this project since its inception last year.

Yellow Ribbon Day starts in the morning with an RFBAQ light attack prototype fire truck and a medium attack fire truck retrofitted with crew protection spray system on display at the front entrance of Parliament House, and MPs are encouraged to inspect the many crew safety innovations displayed on these vehicles. Yellow Ribbon Day concludes with the Queensland Parliamentary Friends of Rural Fire Brigades function between 6.30pm and 8.30pm.

With a number of Rural Fire Brigade members attending the evening function travelling for up to three days to attend the two hour event and taking time off work exhibits the level of commitment the importance that brigade members have in being able to tell the story of their local brigades and local volunteers.
