The RFBAQ SEM met on Saturday 6th July and approved a $10,000 grant for East Nanango RFB. With 34 active members 1 light attack and 1 medium attack the brigade is building a training room. The brigade also has a Buy Local grant application in for fitting out the training room.
Tinaroo RFB in the Innisfail Area has now completed the fit out of their training room following a $3,254 RFBAQ grant for floor paint, flip chart, easel, shelving, tables, chairs and window blinds. Tinaroo and surrounding brigades will certainly get use out of the equipment with 58 active and 6 support members. If it’s happening on the Tablelands, it’s probably happening at Tinaroo.
Good news for Cane Brigades
Following RFBAQ advocacy to RFSQ regarding 3,000 , 4,000 and 5,000 litre trailers that are towed behind tractors, RFSQ will now pay for repair or replacement. Not only are these trailers used very effectively to fight cane fires, but are also used as bulk water carriers to fill slip on units, yellow and red trucks for bushfire, car fires on highways and structural fires. Many of these galvanised tanks are now over 25 years old and there has been an adhoc approach to the repair and replacement of these vital pieces of equipment. Some areas refused to repair and replace and directed the brigade to the RFBAQ for a grant, whilst other areas paid 50% toward the replacement costs with the other 50% being paid for by the brigade, landholders or the RFBAQ.
The Rural Fire Service has now agreed that as the large water trailers are owned by the state, the state will repair or replace this aging equipment. The first brigade that will receive this support is Quingilli / Behana Gorge RFB in the Cairns Area. With 84 brigade members situated on the Bruce Highway south of Gordonvale the brigade is bordered by Walsh’s Pyramid and National Park, the local dump, and a cane railway that often causes fires from friction caused by the locomotive and cane bins. The brigade's current watertank was built in 1993 and is mostly held together by love.
*Of specific note is the work Cairns & Peninsular RFBAQ Rep John Thomson who has been advocating for this result consistently for a number of years.
