International Firefighters' Day 2023

Message from the Commissioner:

Dear colleagues,

Today is International Firefighters Day – a day where firefighters across the globe are recognised for their dedication, commitment, bravery and sacrifice.

This year we acknowledge the day even more solemnly, so soon after the loss this week of our colleague, First Class Firefighter Izzy Nash, and the serious injuries sustained by Senior Firefighter Lia Drew.

This week’s tragic event is a stark reminder of the challenges and dangers our people face every day to save lives in the community.

The date chosen for International Firefighters’ Day, 4 May, was linked to the feast day of St Florian (the patron saint of all firefighters). St Florian was the first known commander of one firefighting squad in the Roman Empire. He lost his life, as well as those of his colleagues, for protecting the same humane ideas which firefighters all over the world share even today.

In Queensland, a few things will happen today as we remember Izzy, support Lia, and pay our respects to firefighters who have also paid the ultimate sacrifice.

At midday Fire and Rescue stations across the state will observe one minute’s silence followed by a 30 second “Sound Off” of station sirens in memory of Izzy and all firefighters who have been lost in the line of duty or passed on before us.

I would encourage all staff and volunteers to join us in observing one minute’s silence at midday.

Landmarks across Brisbane, including Parliament House, will also be lit up in red and white and as a mark of respect for International Firefighter’s Day and to remember Izzy.

As Acting Commissioner I am proud to have stewardship of an organisation that has drawn together so well in our grief for Izzy, our support for Lia, and to help each other through this extremely difficult period.

I encourage everyone to take the opportunity today to thank our firefighters, past and present, for their hard work, courage and dedication.

Thank you for your service.
